Careers in Sociology Panel
Attend this event to hear from Laurier alumni working in various industries. Panelists will share stories about their career paths, tips for navigating the job market, and their perspectives on future work opportunities.
This event is hosted in partnership with the Laurier Sociology Students' Association. All students from the Faculty of Arts are welcome to attend.
Panelists:
Isabel Burdett, BA '17 Sociology - Program Evaluator, City of Toronto
Isabel graduated in 2017 with an Honors Bachelor Degree in Psychology and Sociology. Following this, she received a Masters Degree in Sociology from McMaster University. After graduating from McMaster in 2018, Isabel worked as a research assistant at the Responsible Gambling Council where she assisted in the writing of reports, journal articles and other necessary documents. This led to her becoming a senior evaluation and research analyst where she led the evaluations of Ministry of Health funded programs, led end of year evaluation reports, prepared and submitted grants, and developed and implemented assessment tools. As of 2022, Isabel has been working at Toronto Public Health as a Program Evaluator, where she leads several projects in support of TPH's strategic priorities. This has included conducting evaluations of a hospital screening pilot project, hyperlocal and equity vaccination strategies, and an urban health grant application process. In this role, she prepares and presents reports and recommendations to the senior management team and the Medical Officer of Health. Isabel was first introduced to research at Laurier through the Applied Social Research Stream in Sociology and the Research Specialist Stream in Psychology. These courses inspired her to continue on to a Master's Degree where she strengthened her research skills and provided the necessary expertise to begin working in research outside of academia.
Jason Spencer, BA '05 Sociology - Program Coordinator at Community Justice Initiatives
Jason graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2005 with a BA in Sociology. Post graduation, he worked at the House of Friendship supporting men experiencing homelessness and at The Working Centre as an Employment Counsellor. For the last decade, Jason has been working at Community Justice Initiatives (CJI). He connected with CJI during a period of transition and found that CJI's values and work in restorative justice aligned with his own personal values of how to be in community. Prior to his current role, he coordinated CJI's Community Mediation Services supporting community members to resolve conflict. He also works as mediator and training facilitator. He has completed the Certificate of Conflict Management and Mediation from Conrad Grebel and uses this knowledge and experience to support individuals and organizations experiencing conflict.
Jason enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, camping, and kayaking and enjoys various forms of gaming, and reading when he is indoors.
Natasha Ferguson, BA '18 Sociology - Human Resources Business Partner, Wellington Health Care Alliance
Natasha graduated from Laurier in 2018 with a major in Sociology and minor in Psychology. Thereafter, she graduated from Conestoga College in 2019 with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Human Resources Management. In the summer of 2019, Natasha worked as an HR Summer Student at her local hospital, Groves Memorial Community Hospital (Fergus, ON). Natasha has remained with the organization ever since, working in various HR positions that have ultimately led her to her current position as an HR Business Partner.
